Focus Smart
Focus Smart

Why do people claim to be smart to support that their opinion and world view is right?
I have seen these cases popping up notoriously especially from the conservative side. If the argument is flawless then why not try to focus on debating points, but no its all "I'm a smart person this" and "that." Debates are meant to be precise to the point not an autobiography and then some snippets of opinions here and there to keep the argument from falling. I find this type of constructed argument to be in the worst category of starting a discussion of resolving political differences. Notice that this guy actually boasts about his "intelligence" before even remarking what his POSITION is

The implication is that the person is so smart that you shouldn't disagree with him.
In sociological terms, this is called "closure" - an attempt to shut the other side down before they have a chance to present their arguments.
In debating terms, it's a red flag that the guy doesn't have a strong case and is relying on attitude to carry the day.
People that really ARE smart don't have to advertise it unless it's germane to the issues. They demonstrate it with their facts and logic.
